Artist statement
Growing up I have always loved the arts. Painting, building, drawing, photography, etc have always been big interests of mine. When I was little, I was always finding things around the house to transform. For example, I would take cereal boxes and turn them into laptops by cutting them in half and drawing a keyboard and screen on it. I would take cardboard boxes, draw a dashboard on one of the flaps and turn it into a car. I was always being creative and wanting to make things. One of the motivators for being artistic for me are my parents. My mom is now an art teacher at Park elementary and was always there to paint, draw, and give me creative ideas. My dad has always been involved in carpentry and now builds log homes. This is where I always got my building bug. I would constantly watch him build and it inspired me to do the same. As I have gotten older, I have really appreciated different forms of art and I have come to find art in my everyday life. Everything around me seems to give me an idea about something to paint or take a picture of. Growing up in Durango and living out of town half the time, nature has been a big influence for my art. When I am out at my dad’s and I don’t have service, I find something to take a picture of or paint. My parent’s professions and growing up in Durango have been major motivators for creating art.
In all forms of art, my style has changed over the years. In drawing, I like to create products that have a personal connection to me or my feelings. With my self directed project, I wanted to create a piece that was visually appealing, represented my love for nature, as well as create something that would challenge my skills. I haven’t really drawn glass in my life so as the project went along, I continued to improve the glass like qualities of the bulb. I think that challenging yourself goes along with your style. All art that you create should challenge your skills. I want my art to make the viewer question the meaning behind my pieces. I like drawing what I’m feeling, but I try to represent it in a way that is more creative and has depth to the meaning. I want people to stop and think about what I’m trying to say through my artwork. I want people to feel as if they can connect to it as well and find that emotional connection within my drawings.
If I did not have art in my life, I honestly don’t know what I would do. I am constantly doing something artistic whether it is making something for my room, making gifts and surprises for my friends, making collages, editing pictures, etc. My life would not have any of the unique things that I have created over the years. If I didn’t have art in my life, I would be sad and bored a lot of the time. I make art when I can’t find anything to do. When I go to college this next year, I hope to get involved with some sort of design and stay with the arts. Having all these art classes over the years and naturally loving the arts, has really opened my eyes to a big passion of mine. Different forms of art have captured my attention and I hope that I will be able to discover what I truly want to do with art in the near future. Art is also in almost everything. Buildings, new forms of renewable energy that are constantly evolving, new sports technology and so on. Art is everywhere, which is why I think that it is so important to appreciate it and value what it takes to create all of these beautiful forms of art.
