Objectives:
1) Take a photo of taillights of a car at night while driving.
2) Play with the shutter speed to create lines that come from the lights.
2) Play with the shutter speed to create lines that come from the lights.
Research:
These photos give me different ideas about whether to take a photo with a long shutter speed on a straight road or curvy road. They also give me ideas about whether to have town lights in the background or a landscape at dusk.

5 Step Critique:
Step 1: OBSERVE
Step 2: DESCRIBE
In this photo, there are many different colors. This is a picture of a car that drove by on the street on a corner at night. Because I used a slow shutter speed, it drew out the light that came from the headlights and the taillights. Behind the lights is part of a hill that comes right up to the edge of the road and beyond that is a road that leads away from where the photo was taken. Though it was night, the sky is not black; it is more of a medium blue color. Because all of the color in the photo is on the darker side, the drawn out strand of light across the middle of the picture is the main object that the eye is attracted to.
Step 3: ANALYZE
I think the most prominent element of design in this photo is line. The white and red strand of color across the image really draws the eye towards it, especially since the background is a little washed out from the similar colors. This line is the main object of the image. I also think the most prominent principle of design is balance. The line of color across the image sort of divides it into sections. The line is horizontal, almost half way through the picture, making for a balanced look with darkness on each side of the line (on the top and bottom).
Step 4: INTERPRET
The message that is portrayed from this image is that we miss so much when it seems like all we did is blink. The shutter speed could represent ones eye and that we could miss something in a blink of an eye. Life is happening so fast around us, making it hard to pick up on the little things and enjoy the view. We all get so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget to enjoy the beauty around us. We should slow down and pay attention to the little things.
Step 5: JUDGEMENT
I think this piece is effective in portraying that life goes by in a blink of an eye, especially if we don't stop to look around for a while because of the streak of light that is the main object of the image. This light streak gives the illusion that it went by really fast. I think it was also successful in having enough in the photo to look around and notice other details, but those details don't detract or distract from the main object. One area that I think would improve the quality of this photo is to have put the camera on a tripod while waiting for the slow shutter speed so that it would come out more crisp rather than a little fuzzy.
