This drawing of the tail of a betta fish is my scratchboard project. The task was to find an animal that has lots of texture, and then to transfer the textured animal onto the scratchboard and use shading (pressure of the scraping) to show the values of the animal's texture. The key skills and knowledge in this project included using scratching techniques to create a realistic drawing of our selected animal. Some other important drawing and design skills that this work addressed include being able to show the highlights of the texture by scraping harder. Fine detail was a key skill in this project. In my final product, you will notice that I succeeded in showing the highlights on each scale and showing the unique shapes of each scale rather than a pattern of the same scale. This made the drawing more realistic to the reference drawing. I had challenges with the fins on the fish and showing the flowyness of them with it being so zoomed in. What I learned while constructing and finishing this project is the value of each line that you make. Because this is scratchboard, there is no erasing so it is important to make the correct line the first time. In reflecting on this piece, I am proud of my ability to show the characteristics of each individual scale and make no major mistakes that could not be undone. I need to continue working on showing the fine details in the fins and show that they are more flowy rather than stiff. Also with it being so zoomed in, it is hard to tell what it is at first glance. If I were to do it again, I would probably zoom out more and show more of the shape of the fish rather than just the scales on the back of the fish.
