Objectives:
1) Take a photo of different rock formations in the desert over spring break.
2) Edit photo by using mage adjustments to create a dark sky for the background.
2) Edit photo by using mage adjustments to create a dark sky for the background.
Research:
Every single rock formation is unique, which is why I think it would be a good idea to capture one that has a story behind it for me. All of these images give me ideas about whether to take the picture in the day time with few clouds in the sky or while it is overcast and rainy. It of course depends on the day that I am looking at these formations, but I like the idea of having a darker background (dark, cloudy sky) with the bright orangish red rock that contrasts.

5 Step Critique:
Step 1: OBSERVE
Step 2: DESCRIBE
This picture was taken of South Six Shooter in Indian Creek by the Needles District as we were hiking to the top to climb the tower. In the foreground there are little shrubs randomly scattered across the cryptobiotic soil. Then behind that is the cone that leads up to the tower with the reddish orange rocks and sand. At the very top are the two towers, one of which we topped out on. The sky in the background is quite dark and overcast. There is a lot of contrast between the shrubs, cone and sky in the background. This photo has many different colors.
Step 3: ANALYZE
One element of design that stands out to me in this photo is the color. I really like how the foreground has spots of dark green with an orangish color in between, while right above that (the cone of South Six Shooter) is bright orangish red that contrasts a lot with the dark, overcast sky. The contrast of colors really add to the richness that comes from this image. A principle of design that stands above the others is unity. I really like the angle that this photo was taken because of the way that the cone was centered in the middle with the tower on top, right in the middle. The cone is all of the same shade of oranges and reds and it is also in the middle of the picture, which is what draws your eye to it. The colors work well together, making for a unified look.
Step 4: INTERPRET
I think the sole meaning behind this photo is that it is to represent that there will always be obstacles to overcome but once we get over the hump, we are able to look back on our accomplishments. There are always going to be challenges that we need to face but as we are facing them, we are able to "look down at who we used to be, because we climbed so high". We can always do whatever we put our minds to, so why not climb up one more mountain because in the end, I guarantee that we won't regret it.
Step 5: JUDGEMENT
This picture was successful in many ways because of the angle that it was taken and the colors that it included. The colors contrast a lot, making for a vibrant image. The unified look of the cone makes for a good focal point of the photo. The stormy clouds add to the interpretation that we can conquer whatever, even at the worst times, and it will all be worth it in the end. Overall, I feel like this is a good representation of the interpretation and is also visually appealing.
